Petals from Elon, Part II

Last week's Petals class began with Susan, our lovely volunteer coordinator, speaking to our student visitors from Elon about the Petals for a Purpose program. She explained that the finished bottles go to Meals on Wheels and how they make a positive impact in the community. Joyce, our amazing administrative assistant, also shared her personal experience with the Arc having a positive impact on her life.

At the beginning of class, Becky explained to the students the techniques to making the finished bottles.    Becky has been running the Petals program very successfully. She really knows how to make a beautiful arrangement, and she loves what she does.

The flowers for this week were donated by Whole Foods. They were truly beautiful including an array of red and pink roses and multiple colors of daisies. The flowers were so vibrant and colorful. But we had to be careful not to cut ourselves on the rose thorns!

Some students from Elon really took to Beth. They even got camera-shy Beth to pose for a picture! Beth really enjoys the Petals class. Her favorite part? Bringing a couple of the finished arrangements to the building next door to donate to the law offices. "They make people smile,"she said of the flowers.

Petals class participant Nancy really really loved speaking with the student visitors. She and one of the visitors even share a birthday in a month! We'd like to wish her a really happy early birthday and thank her for providing all the volunteers with lively conversation, including ones about Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift and One Direction.

One of the finished arrangements from the Elon visitors. Becky helped to teach the students how to make the best arrangements, and they caught on quickly!

At the end of the class, we made so many arrangements that there were enough for each of the students to take home one of their own! Much thanks to Sara for bringing her amazing students from Elon these past couple of weeks. It was such a pleasure having them. They really contributed a lot to the program, and they did much more than simply creating these beautiful flower arrangements.
