Petals with a purpose would not be possible without the volunteers. The volunteers could not be organized and dedicated without the help of the PWAP Project Leader, Becci.
After interviewing Becci, I personally gained a greater
appreciation for the importance of volunteering and how much it can mean to
those who have a passion to help others.
Becci has been volunteering with the Arc for two years. She enjoys volunteering because when the
class is over, “I feel a sense of accomplishment and a sense of pride in what
the kids I volunteer with-what they accomplish.” She stated that she started volunteering with
seniors in Indiana, as an activities coordinator planning activities for
seniors at the center such as socials, exercise classes, and trips. Her history with volunteering is a passionate
one. She believes that PWAP is an
extremely important project because “it has multiple benefits-it teaches the
participants the artistry of flower arranging and it benefits the people that
are the recipients of the Meals on Wheels; they greatly appreciate our work.” As with any volunteering projects, Becci has
found the experience of working with PWAP to be very educational; “Experiences
at the Arc have taught me that the potential hidden within a developmentally
disabled person is awesome and only needs to be tapped.”
One of the aspects of the of PWAP that Becci most respects
is the aspect of recycling and the effort to keep the project environmentally
friendly. “ I think it is extremely important
to find environmentally friendly projects, it breeds a knowledge of conservation,
which is critically important, and we can do so much more with fewer resources
when you recycle.”
Melisa matches the flowers, beautiful!
“Why do I volunteer? I feel that for myself and others who
are in their senior years that you should help and give back, as you were given
to in your younger life. Even if a
person has any talents-such as flowe arranging, you can use your powers to give
to other people and what you do will be very appreciated. And this for me and
for others is the time to do that.”
Becci was kind enough to offer some advice for those who
want to volunteer; “If a person has an interest in volunteering, they shouldn’t
worry about not being able to relate to a developmentally disabled person, or
any other person-it is possible and gratifying if you try it."
“In the activities that I help with at the Arc I have to be
aware of what I am doing, that I need to be cogniscent of the beauty that they
are creating, and cogniscent of the beauty in what we are doing.”
Everyone loves their new hats!!
